The story

Niujiao is split by a now-covered stream; the eastern side, Da'ao, was the village's shopping street, home mostly to the Cao clan who lived by fishing and trade. From the mid-1990s local leaders championed 'living in Matsu and preserving its villages', restoring granite houses as cafes and guesthouses — a movement that later spread to Qinbi in Beigan. Lantern Festival 'Baimeng' rites remain a highlight of the village calendar.
