The story
Guanshan was once called Lilong, from an Amis word referring to the chiggers common here. Under Japanese rule it became a sub-prefecture seat in 1915 and the Guanshan district capital in 1937, drawing settlers for sugar, camphor and timber and laid out on a grid. The old station, railway dormitories and the Jiabin Hotel remain among newer buildings, though some official residences are in ruins.
