Xinhua, formerly Tavokan, was a collection depot for hill-country produce. The Zhongzheng Road shophouses, built in two phases about 17 years apart in the 1920s–30s, show two generations of Baroque facades and were voted the region's top historic architecture; a second old street on Zhongshan Road was demolished in 1995.
