The story
Jiji was a Qing-era market on the route into the Shuishalian highlands and boomed in the Japanese era when the branch railway carried camphor, timber and bananas. The 1999 earthquake struck nearby, flattening the wooden station, which was rebuilt to its original design, while the collapsed Wuchang Temple was left as a memorial. Today the streets around the station are a family-friendly mix of snacks and bike rentals, close to the famous camphor-tree 'green tunnel'.
