Hakka pioneers crossed the Meinong River and founded the settlement in 1736, and Yong'an Road was its first street, running about 2 km from the paper-burning pagoda to the East Gate. Along it are century-old Hakka courtyard homes, earth-god shrines and the pagoda where written paper was respectfully burned. The East Gate was shelled by Japanese troops in 1895 and rebuilt in 1937.
