The story

In the Japanese era Taiheichō was the commercial and cultural heart of Taiwanese-run Taipei, home to Chiang Wei-shui's clinic, the Taiwanese Cultural Association, theatres and restaurants. On the evening of 27 February 1947 a cigarette-confiscation clash outside the Tianma Tea House sparked the 228 Incident. Most buildings have since been rebuilt, so the history lives mainly in plaques.
