Known as Yuejin, Yanshui was one of Qing Taiwan's top ports ("first Tainan, second Lukang, third Mengjia, fourth Yuejin"). Japanese-era street reforms replaced low houses with two-storey shops, several of which survive. The town is famous for its Lantern Festival beehive fireworks and its springy yi-mein noodles.
