Yanping Street grew outside the Dutch Fort Zeelandia in the 1600s and is often called "Taiwan's first street". In the Qing era Anping was Tainan's outer port, and merchants mounted "sword lion" plaques over doorways to ward off evil. A controversial widening in the 2000s removed some old houses; today it is a busy strip of shrimp-cracker and candied-fruit shops, with older homes hidden in side alleys.
