Bopiliao is one of the few places in Taipei that keeps a Qing-era street layout; the name is said to come from stripping bark off fir logs shipped from Fuzhou. A Japanese-era plan to use the land for a school froze redevelopment, accidentally preserving the whole row, which was registered as a historic building in 2010. Restored, it now hosts exhibitions and was a set for the film Monga.
