Dali sits at the Yilan end of the Caoling Historic Trail, where Qing-era travellers between Tamsui and Kavalan rested before or after crossing the mountains. Legend says walkers picked up a round pebble and passed it over the incense burner at the Dali Jade Emperor Temple as a protective charm. Today it is a small fishing village strung along the coast road, with a few stone houses and old banyans left.
