The story
Houtong was once one of Taiwan's top coal producers; the Ruisan coal-processing plant still stands by the station. After the mines closed around 1990 the village emptied, until volunteers began posting photos of its street cats in 2008, turning it into an internationally known 'cat village' featured by CNN.
