The story
Donggang was a Qing port with a sub-prefectural post, and by the late 19th century the gateway for the Pingtung plain, with Yanping Street as its goods hub. In the Japanese era it was a designated trading port; some Baroque and Japanese-style buildings remain, though storms have taken many. The triennial Welcoming the Royal Lord festival at Donglong Temple, ending in a boat burning, is famous across Taiwan.
