Taiping Road was rebuilt during Japanese-era urban planning, and its shophouses were given ornate baroque gables decorated with merchant names, family hall names and floral reliefs, forming a continuous run of roughly 600 metres, often cited as one of the longest such streets in Taiwan. Douliu was then the seat of the regional government, and merchants competed to show off their wealth on their facades. Restored, it remains a working local shopping street and looks especially fine when lit at night.
