Dounan was originally Talibu, after a village of the Hoanya plains indigenous people. After the main railway arrived in 1903 the town became a key shipping point for Yunlin's farm produce, and the old warehouses beside the station have been turned into the Talibu culture park. The old streets along Zhongzheng and Zhongshan roads are mostly everyday shops with a few Japanese-era shophouses.
