The story
Huwei grew rapidly after the Dai-Nippon Sugar company built its mill here in 1906, once the largest in East Asia, earning the town the nickname 'little Taipei'; it is still one of Taiwan's few working sugar mills. Zhongshan Road, which leads straight to the factory, has always been the town's busiest street and is lined with Japanese-era landmarks such as the former district office, now the Yunlin Glove Puppetry Museum, while renovated old houses host cafés and bookshops.
