Fangli was land of the Fangli community, one of the Taokas tribes, before Han settlers built a walled earthen town here that became the area's trading centre in the Qing era. The walls are long gone, marked only by monuments at the former south and north gates. What remains is Shuntian Temple, the 'Mazu inside the city', and the well-preserved Minnan courtyard house of the Cai family, a county monument.
