Sanyi grew rich on camphor in the Qing era, and when the camphor trees were felled their leftover stumps were carved, so woodcarving took over as the local industry; it is now Taiwan's largest carving community. What visitors call Sanyi Old Street is usually the Shuimei woodcarving street, lined with galleries and shops—a postwar commercial street rather than a historic one. Pair it with the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum, opened in 1995.
