The story
Guangsheng is where Sanyi began; locals call it the 'old street', and its original name Sanchahe ('three-forked river') came from streams meeting here. Officials disliked the character for 'fork' and swapped it for the similar-looking 'yi', giving today's Sanyi. Camphor trade made it a market town, later succeeded by woodcarving; most buildings have been rebuilt, and the township has added murals along a 'Hakka hospitality corridor'.
