Jincheng was called Houpu; after the Qing moved the Kinmen garrison headquarters here from the old walled town, it became the island's political and commercial centre. The old streets around Juguang Road radiate from the Town God Temple, near the Qiu Liang-gong Mother's Chastity Arch and the restored Garrison Headquarters. Today they are packed with shops selling Cantonese congee, sesame flatbreads, peanut candy and knives forged from artillery shells.
