The story

In 1924 Kinmen chamber of commerce head Fu Xi-qi and gentleman Weng Tong-wen raised funds in Southeast Asia to build a street 'worthy of being a model'. Its 40 T-shaped-plan shophouses pair red-brick arcaded Western-Japanese fronts with Minnan rear halls. Renamed 'Self-Strengthening Street' after the US cut ties with Taiwan in 1979, it regained its name a few years later and is now a registered historic building.
