This lane lies outside the north gate of the old Kinmen walled town, built in the early Ming. With gate controls and curfews inside, traders set up outside the walls, creating a vegetable-market street just wide enough for handcarts. When the Qing moved the seat of power to Houpu it declined; it was registered as a historic building in 2005 and mixes Ming-style shophouses, Minnan courtyard homes and military-era air-raid shelters.
