The story

Qiaotou flourished after Taiwan's first modern sugar mill opened here in 1901, and Japanese-era street reforms added faux-Baroque shophouse facades. In 1979 opposition activists held the first post-war political march here, so it is called 'Taiwan's first democracy street'. Road widening in 2009 removed most old buildings; it is now an evening market and local shopping street.
