The story
Japanese-era Sakaechō (around today's Hengyang Road) was the most fashionable shopping district inside the Taipei city walls, the 'Taipei Ginza'. Taiwan's first department store, Kikumoto, opened here in 1932, and the island's first traffic light followed in 1935. After the war it was known for fabric, tailors and bookshops, but most old buildings are gone.
