The story
Sanxia's old street began in the mid-18th century as a river-port hub for camphor, tea and indigo-dyed cloth. Burned by Japanese troops in 1895 and rebuilt by residents, it gained Western-style facades from 1916, and its red-brick arcade runs about 200 m. The restoration won a FIABCI Prix d'Excellence in 2007, and nearby Zushi Temple, rebuilt under painter Li Mei-shu, is famed for its carvings.
