The story
Xinmin Street sits at the heart of Taoyuan's old walled town beside Jingfu Temple and is nicknamed 'Taoyuan's first street'; reports put its age at about 180 years, and it was once lively enough to be called Taoyuan's Ximending. As commerce moved elsewhere the street declined and most old buildings were rebuilt. Today it is worth a short stop for a decades-old youtiao (fried dough) maker and a few independent cafés in old houses.
