Shangping sits on County Road 122 between Zhudong and Wufeng; in the Japanese era it was a trading post for camphor, timber and tea and an exchange point between Hakka settlers and Saisiyat and Atayal communities. About 100 m of two-storey shophouses from the 1910s–30s survive, mixing brick, timber and pseudo-Baroque arches. There are almost no tourist shops, so it is a photo stop on the way to Wufeng or Qingquan.
