Zhudong, once called Shuqilin, became the collection point for camphor and timber from the mountains in the Qing era, and later boomed with natural gas, oil fields and the Neiwan line, which opened in 1951. The old core along Changchun and Dongning roads centres on the Central Market, billed as one of the largest Hakka markets. Few old buildings survive; the draw is the Hakka food in and around the market.
