In 1835 the Jinguangfu land-reclamation company, a Hokkien–Hakka venture led by Jiang Xiuluan, pushed into Beipu, building guard posts and a defensive settlement around Citian Temple. The national monument Jinguangfu Office and the Jiang family's Tianshui Hall still stand, and the Jiang A-Hsin Mansion recalls the Japanese-era tea-export boom. Today Beipu is Hsinchu's busiest Hakka street, famed for lei cha, dried persimmons and Oriental Beauty tea.
