The story
Xindian old street in Shitan lies just off Provincial Highway 3; development limits around the Mingde Reservoir catchment kept it a simple Hakka village. It has a communal laundry pool, a century-old longan tree under which missionary doctor George Mackay is said to have pulled teeth, and painted lanes. An old granary now sells local produce, and a bowl of grass jelly makes a good break.
