The story
Taixi, formerly called Haikou, is known for oyster and clam farming. Zhongshan Road, 'Taixi's First Street', was the area's earliest street and its commercial and political centre from the Japanese era into the early postwar years; a few buildings still carry baroque ornament. With an ageing, shrinking population many houses stand empty, though some have been renovated by local groups.
