The story
Tuku, formerly Tuku 'mud trousers', venerates its Mazu at Shuntian Temple, and locals say 'Beigang's Mazu is famous, Tuku's is steady'. The current temple dates from 1834 and survived the late-colonial campaign to close temples by affiliating with a Japanese Buddhist sect and enshrining a Guanyin statue from Japan. Old barbers, photo studios, pharmacies and a rice mill still line Zhongzheng Road, and local groups run walking tours of the shophouses.
