The story
Beidou, once called Baodou, was a Qing-era river port on the Dongluo River and in the early Japanese period the largest town in southern Changhua. A stele of 1857 in front of Dian'an Temple forbids ferrymen from extorting passengers, a reminder that crossing the river once meant relying on rafts. Silting and the main railway bypassing the town led to its decline; today it is famous for hand-shaped, triangular Beidou meatballs, with a whole row of ba-wan shops around the temple.
