The story
Yongjing Street was laid out in the Jiaqing era by Hakka settlers from Raoping, Guangdong, who pooled their own money, and is often called Taiwan's first privately built street. It was destroyed in the 1826 Hokkien-Hakka feud and rebuilt around Yong'an Temple. An old cinema, inn, grocery and barbershop survive, and a mural wall by a local painter recreates the street in the 1950s and 60s. The famous jibe 'Yongjing ice pops, cold and hard' pokes fun at the locals' distinctive accent rather than any actual ice pop.
