Caotun's old name, Caoxiedun ('straw-sandal mound'), comes from porters who swapped worn sandals here in the Qing. Heping Street was the town's 'new street', with a push-car tramway stop where it met Zhongshan Street. Long a traffic bottleneck, it has recently been widened to 12 metres, and little of the old streetscape survives.
