Dali was originally Dalige, after the wooden stakes ('ge') to which boatmen tied their rafts against the fast current of the Dali River, and it thrived as a river-landing town in the Qing. Fuxing Temple at the head of the street predates 1811 and is remembered as the launch point of the 1786 Lin Shuangwen uprising, one of the largest revolts of Qing Taiwan. The street is quiet today, with a small culture museum, a pickled-mustard lane and an upside-down banyan.
