The story
Under Japanese rule Chiayi's main avenue (today Zhongshan Rd) was for officials and Japanese residents, while the parallel "Ertong" (Zhongzheng Rd) was the Taiwanese people's commercial street, anchored by the East and West markets. Multi-generation herb shops, sewing-machine dealers and old eateries still line it, and the city has revived it with guided walks and an annual Ertong neighbourhood festival.
