The story
Cijin is where Han settlers first put down roots in Takao; fishermen pooled money to build a Mazu temple here in the Kangxi era, and the street before it became known as 'Takao's first street'. After Takao opened as a treaty port in the 1860s, the area hosted trading houses. Road widening in 1990 removed most old buildings, and today Miaoqian Road is all seafood restaurants, snacks and weekend crowds.
