The story

Yancheng was Kaohsiung's first downtown, home to the Japanese-era city hall and trading companies. After the war, Horie Market became famous for foreign goods brought ashore by sailors, Dagouding was a market built over a covered drainage canal, and Xinle Street filled with gold and fabric shops. It declined as the city centre moved east, but the Pier-2 art district and old-school eateries have brought young visitors back.
