The story

Hamasen is land reclaimed when the port was dredged in the early Japanese era; its name comes from the Japanese 'hama-sen', the beach railway lines to the docks and fish market. It was once Kaohsiung's political and economic centre, home to the district office and the first Takao Station. When the centre moved east many Japanese-era shophouses survived, and a resident-led preservation movement has revived interest.
