In the Taishō era this stretch of Zhongshan Road was named Shinseibashi-dori after the bridge over the Lüchuan canal, and its lily-of-the-valley street lamps earned it the nickname 'Suzuran-dori'. It was Taichung's smartest shopping street until the city centre drifted west after the war. The revival of colonial buildings such as the Miyahara eye clinic, now a famous sweets shop, brought crowds back, while the hexagonal Second Market at the far end remains a local breakfast institution.
