The story
Nantun was once called Litoudian, 'plough-shop street', after the blacksmiths who forged farm tools for the surrounding paddies, making it one of the earliest market streets in the Taichung basin. Wanhe Temple, founded in the Yongzheng era of the Qing, anchors the street, and a blacksmith, tofu maker, rice-flour shop and herbalists still trade along its 200 metres. Every Dragon Boat Festival locals race in wooden clogs in a custom found nowhere else in Taiwan.
