The story
Benjie, Dongshi's original street, mixes old and new buildings, and you can still hear the rare Dabu dialect of Hakka in its shops; seven temples line a 500-metre stretch, earning it the name 'street of religious culture'. The town boomed on timber from the Dasyueshan forests and the Dongshi railway branch; after logging ended and the line closed in 1991, the old station became a Hakka culture park at the end of the Dongfeng bike path.
