Erlin is an old market town in southwestern Changhua whose Renhe Temple, the area's oldest Mazu temple, preserves couplets and a stele from the Jiaqing era of the Qing. In 1925 cane farmers protesting low prices from the Japanese sugar company sparked the Erlin Incident, a milestone of Taiwan's farmers' movement, with the temple as one of its stages. The town prospered in the Japanese era, but only scattered old shophouses remain along Zhongzheng Road.
