The story
Zhongzheng Road was Hemei's commercial street; nearby Daodong Academy, founded in 1857, is the best-preserved Qing-dynasty academy in Changhua and a national monument. A few minutes past the market stands the Japanese-era residence of the town chief. Hemei was known for textile and umbrella workshops; the street itself is mostly everyday shops with few old buildings left.
