The story

In the Qing dynasty Lukang's main street, Wufu Street, was roofed over so shoppers could walk without seeing the sky, earning it the name Bujiantian. In 1934 the Japanese authorities tore off the roof and widened it into today's Zhongshan Road, lined with Japanese-era Western-style facades. It is still Lukang's main shopping street, full of old bakeries and incense shops, but the covered street survives only in photographs.
