The story
Lukang was central Taiwan's chief trading port under the Dutch and the Qing, remembered in the saying 'first Tainan, second Lukang, third Monga'. When the main covered street was widened in 1934, the parallel Yaolin and Putou streets escaped and kept their deep red-brick Minnan shophouses, with shop at the front, living quarters in the middle and courtyards behind, often 40 to 70 metres long. In 1986 they became Taiwan's first protected historic street district, and the town's tally of heritage sites is second only to Tainan.
