Pingxi, once called Shidi, grew on coal and the Pingxi branch railway. Its long narrow shophouses climb the hillside, and the railway bridge crosses right over the street, a classic photo spot. The Lantern Festival sky-lantern release reportedly began as villagers' signal of safety from bandits, and the post office keeps one of Taiwan's oldest cast-iron postboxes.
