The story

Xizhi was once 'Shuifanjiao', 'where the water turns back', the point up the Keelung River reached by the rising tide; the Japanese renamed it Xizhi ('tide stops'). Zhongzheng Road grew into a market street in the Qianlong era as a river-boat stop. Jide Temple, the town's Mazu temple founded in the Jiaqing era, and old mansions like the Su residence remain, though the houses are private.
