The story
Shalu takes its name from Salach, a village of the Papora plains indigenous people, before Han settlers built a market town here in the Qing dynasty. The Siping Street area by the market and station is still a busy everyday shopping district, but nearly all the buildings are postwar, so there is little old architecture left to see.
