Known as Wuchagang in the Qing, Wuqi became central Taiwan's junk-trade hub after its port opened in the Daoguang era, and the street filled with trading houses. Most facades you see today were rebuilt after the 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake, their granite-wash fronts still carved with merchant names. Silting and the later Taichung Harbor new town drained the street's life, leaving a quiet row of facades plus Zhenwu Temple and a restored Japanese police station.
